How to start a business in Colorado

    Step 1: Register your business.

Step 2: Get your federal tax ID (EIN).

    • Secure your 9-digit EIN from the IRS. You’ll need this to open a business bank account, apply for credit, and manage state tax filings.

Step 3: Register for state taxes.

    • Use the MyBizColorado portal to set up your accounts with the Department of Revenue and the Department of Labor and Employment. This covers sales tax, withholding tax, and unemployment insurance in one place.

Step 4: Verify licensing and permit requirements.

    • While Colorado does not have a "general" state business license, many professions are regulated by the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). You should also check with your specific city for local occupational tax certificates or zoning permits.

Step 5: Secure funding and resources with DreamSpring.
