How to start a business in Missouri

    Step 1: Register your business.

    • Register your LLC, Corporation, or Partnership with the Missouri Secretary of State. If you are operating as a sole proprietorship under a name other than your own, you must also register a "Fictitious Name" (DBA) with the state.

Step 2: Get your federal tax ID (EIN).

    • Obtain your EIN through the IRS. This is a critical step for separating your personal and business finances and is required for hiring employees.

Step 3: Register with the Department of Revenue.

    • Register for a Missouri tax identification number through the Missouri Department of Revenue. This covers sales and use tax, as well as employer withholding tax for your team.

Step 4: Verify licensing and permit requirements.

    • Missouri does not have a "general" state business license, but requirements vary significantly by industry and city. Check the Missouri Business Portal to identify specific state-regulated professions and link to local city/county permit offices.

Step 5: Secure funding and resources with DreamSpring.
