How to start a business in New York

    Step 1: Register your business.
    • Form your LLC, Corporation, or Partnership by filing with the New York Department of State. For sole proprietorships or general partnerships using an assumed name, you must file a Business Certificate with the County Clerk in the county where you operate.

Step 2: Get your federal tax ID (EIN).
    • Apply for your EIN through the IRS. This 9-digit number is necessary for tax filings, opening a business bank account, and hiring employees.

Step 3: Register for state taxes.
Step 4: Verify licensing and permit requirements.
    • New York does not have a "general" state business license, but many professions and local operations do. Check for state-level professional licenses via the Office of the Professions or use the Business Express Wizard to find specific local and state permits.

Step 5: Secure funding and resources with DreamSpring.
